Mathematics equips students with uniquely powerful ways to describe, analyse and solve problems. The language of mathematics is international, and its importance is universally recognised. At Bartholomew School we want to help students build and develop their mathematical thinking skills. We want to prepare our students thoroughly for GCSE examinations and beyond, allowing them to have choices in the future.

In class, as well as learning mathematical knowledge, the students are encouraged to develop their problem solving, communication, visualisation and logical thinking skills. The students will also look at the application of mathematics to everyday life.  

Each year, students will be taught modules of work that last about five weeks. We have written our resources and assessments, to ensure we meet the needs of our students, as well as challenge them.

All students are taught each of these modules, regardless of the set they are in. At the end of each module, there is a test. All students sit the same test. The results of these tests are monitored and if appropriate, students may move into a different set.  We use the results of the Key Stage 2 National Curriculum Assessments to set the students initially. Any students who do not have results from these tests will be set appropriately and monitored closely, before a final setting decision is made.

Students will be set online homework using the MathsWatch Virtual Learning Environment. Tasks will be set on a weekly basis, with progress monitored by your child’s class teacher. We offer a Maths Clinic after school on Thursdays until 4pm. We have a computer room available, which is staffed by at least one of our mathematics teachers. We also offer after-school clinics for our Key Stage 5 students on a Tuesday in T7.

Each year students are encouraged to take part in the UK Mathematics Challenge as well as Team Mathematics competitions against other local schools.  In the past students have had great success in these events and some of our students have even progressed to the European level of the competition.

At Key Stage 4, students follow a linear GCSE course working towards either the higher or foundation tier. Those sitting the higher tier can achieve grades 9 to 4, whilst those sitting the foundation tier can achieve grades 5 to 1. 

The GSCE course content is split into modules which spiral up through the grades over the two years. The exact topics and order in which modules are covered will depend on the tier a student is working towards.

All students have the opportunity to choose GCSE Statistics as one of their GCSE options in Year 10 and 11.  The course introduces students to the statistical enquiry cycle and develops their understanding of how statistics is used outside of the classroom.  The course is linear, with students working towards either the higher or foundation tier.
