English
English teaching in this school aims to develop the students’ ability to communicate with confidence and clarity in both speaking and writing. Students are encouraged to read widely and purposefully, for information and pleasure. They gain experience of writing in a range of styles, to convey their own ideas and demonstrate their understanding of the wide variety of informative, persuasive literary and media texts that they encounter.
Key Stage 3
In the lower school, at Key Stage 3, students are given the opportunity to develop their reading and writing skills, whilst self-confidence in expression and enjoyment in reading are emphasised.
Key Stage 4
In Years 10 and 11, at Key Stage 4, students follow GCSE courses in English and English Literature which extend their abilities in reading, writing and speaking, and enable them to study language and literature in greater depth.
Key Stage 5
Within the Sixth Form, the department runs AS and A2 courses in English Literature, English Language and Literature and Film Studies.
