Modern Languages
We aim to promote an interest in and awareness of the languages and culture of other countries, and in particular French and German speaking nations throughout the world. Language trips undertaken during the year currently include the German exchange to Bavaria, a French exchange to Brittany, trips to Aachen or Lille Christmas markets, Le Touquet, and, for the first time in 2009, a Year 8 mini exchange to Bingen in Germany.
Key Stage 3
All students entering the school begin with either French or German: students joining the school in September 2009 will start with German. Most will take up the second language in Year 8 and study both of them in Years 8 and 9. The main course books used in the first three years are “ECHO” and “EXPO”.
Key Stage 4
All students continue with one language to GCSE although some may wish to carry on with both languages. We also run a two-year GCSE Spanish course from scratch, starting in Year 10. For the GCSE course we use “Logo” and “Métro” as well as a variety of supplementary material. Students take the Edexcel exam-based course, with written coursework in all languages. We are fortunate to have both French,German and Spanish Assistants working with us.
Key Stage 5
Both French and German are offered at AS and A Level.
