Music
The courses offered by the Music Department are based on the four inter-related disciplines of composing, performing, listening and appraising. Through practical experience, students are introduced to a range of music from a variety of cultures, historical periods and genres. The Department also aims to provide each student with a sound theoretical knowledge of the subject, thus enabling them to express ideas using the appropriate instrumentation and musical terminology.
The Music Department is well resourced and has a number of electronic keyboards with an increasing variety of percussion instruments. The central importance of singing is also recognised by the Department. Computers are also incorporated into schemes of work in a variety of ways, including composition and aural training.
Extracurricular musical activities play an important part in the life of the Department and the School. Planned activities include orchestra, wind and string groups, choirs, recorder group and chamber music for the more advanced instrumentalists. Music teachers from the Oxfordshire Music Service visit the school on a weekly basis and offer tuition on a wide range of instruments. Further information about these lessons may be obtained from the Music Department.
