Science
Every student will study all aspects of Science through Years 7 – 11, with the opportunity to progress onto exciting AS/A2 Level courses in Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Psychology and Applied Science. Our aim is to provide every student with a set of skills and a body of scientific knowledge and concepts to equip them for future life. We also encourage the follow-on into science-based careers as well as Further and Higher Education.
We use a wide variety of approaches to maintain high levels of motivation and interest, and courses are constantly refined and developed to suit the needs of the individual. We complement skills gained in other areas of the school, notably those involving literacy, communication, mathematics, ICT and the application of Science in Technology.
Science is a highly relevant subject to people of all ages. At Bartholomew, students are able to explore ideas and theories through practical work and discuss some of the most topical issues relevant to their development as ‘scientifically literate’ citizens. We aim to challenge all students to understand more about the universe they are part of and all that is in it.
Key Stage 3
We have a framework of relevant and practically-based courses, adapted and matched to the attainment targets of the Science National Curriculum. Each unit or module of work includes practical investigations and assessments to give information about the progress of each student. The approach is hands-on and builds on everyday science and experiences.
Key Stage 4
In line with recent national developments at GCSE, at Key Stage 4 we follow the exciting new “Science for the 21st Century” suite of GCSEs (OCR syllabus). Most students will achieve two GCSEs in Science and Additional Science. There is also scope for more able, interested students to study Biology, Chemistry and Physics as separate subjects at GCSE, leading to three separate GCSE qualifications.
Key Stage 5
AS and A2 courses are offered in Biology (OCR syllabus), Chemistry (Edexcel syllabus), Physics (OCR B Advancing Physics syllabus), Psychology (AQA A syllabus) and Applied Science (AQA syllabus).
