Bartholomew School has a vibrant and successful Sixth Form, with the key aim of supporting students in achieving the success they need to pursue their chosen goals. Sixth Form education will always be a stepping-stone to a variety of future possibilities, including training, employment, Further and Higher Education. Students wishing to extend their education beyond the age of sixteen can stay on into the Sixth Form to study AS Levels in Year 12 and continue onto A2 Levels or further AS Levels in Year 13. Alongside these there is an increasing number of BTEC Level 3 qualifications being offered. There is also scope to re-sit key GCSE subjects if appropriate.
A separate prospectus can be downloaded on this page, giving detailed information on courses for the Sixth Form. Subjects usually offered are:
Art, Art Textiles, Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, D&T Food Technology, D&T Product Design, Economics, English Literature, English Language and Literature, Film Studies, French, Geography, German, History, ICT, Mathematics (Pure, Mechanics, Statistics and Further Maths), Music, Physical Education, Physics, Politics, Psychology, Religious Studies, Sociology, Theatre Studies, BTEC Media Studies, BTEC Sport and BTEC Travel & Tourism.
We have excellent academic standards and most of our students in the Sixth Form go on to Higher Education (including a few every year who are accepted at Oxford and Cambridge), while some proceed to a College of Further Education or directly into employment. We pride ourselves on running a more open-access Sixth Form, unlike many other schools, whilst maintaining results which are amongst the best in the county.
The Sixth Form play a central role in the school. They have a dedicated Sixth Form Centre with additional study space and satellite computer rooms in other parts of the school. Most lessons take place in the specialist rooms of the main school buildings.
Each year a Head Boy, Head Girl and their Deputies are appointed from Year 13. A number of students in Year 12 apply to become Student Counsellors or Academic Mentors, supporting younger students when they start in the school. This has been an excellent addition to our pastoral teams.
The Sixth Form students are encouraged to play a full part in the life of the school and there has been a superb record of success amongst these students who have extended their activities into local and national competitions such as Young Enterprise and business and engineering development.
In addition to the academic and pastoral support on offer to students, there are several traditional social events throughout the year, for example the May Ball and the Snowflake Ball which are organised by the students. All Sixth Form students currently have daily use of the gym facility at the school free of charge.
All in all, being a member of the Sixth Form at Bartholomew School is a very fulfilling experience!
