Year 7

In Year 7, almost all learning is in mixed ability groups, whilst ability setting is used in Mathematics. Students follow a balanced variety of subjects, including English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Modern Languages, Music, Art, Design and Technology, Physical Education, Drama, Religion and Philosophy, Information & Communications Technology, Learning 4 Life (PSHCE) and Thinking Skills.

The academic programme for Year 8 is similar to that of Year 7 except that some further setting by ability is introduced in Modern Languages. Setting for the individual is determined by close study of the result of internal examinations, data provided by standardised objective tests and the record of the student's work.

In Year 9, more subjects (for example History) are taught in sets so that any one student can be in a fast set for one subject and a slower one for another, depending on ability. In Year 9 students are well prepared in making option choices for Key Stage 4.

Years 10 and 11

Choice is offered to students in subjects and routes taken in Years 10 and 11. Following discussion between parents, students and teachers, a balanced course is provided for each individual, which will take into account their abilities, interests and preferences.

All students currently take English, Mathematics, Physical Education, Science for the 21st Century, Religious Studies, Design and Technology, ICT and, the vast majority, a Modern Foreign Language. Additional options from a range of Arts, Humanities and Applied subjects are also chosen. A special course is run for those suited to aiming at a five GCSE target. We prepare students for GCSE examinations, mostly to be taken in the summer term of Year 11.

We have a growing range of courses that provide for the individual needs of students. These include Applied GCSE vocational courses run by the local Colleges, Young Apprenticeships and courses that support students with key learning, enterprise and skills within our own curriculum. The partnership links within West Oxfordshire and beyond are being developed to deliver the new Diploma courses.

Full details of all the courses offered are published in a separate booklet, which is given to students during Year 9.
