Year 11 Study Tour to BerlinPosted on: 06/12/2019
In early November the History Department took 61 Year 11 students on a study tour to Berlin to support their GCSE work on the Cold War and Germany 1919-39. The trip coincided with the 30th anniversary of the Berlin Wall ‘coming down’ in 1989 and we were able to see a number of special exhibitions, as well as getting a good view of the commemorative concert at the Brandenburg Gate from the roof of the Reichstag. As well as studying how the city was divided during the Cold War, students also had a chance to explore Germany’s experiences of both democracy and dictatorship in the twentieth century, including visits to Sachsenhausen concentration camp and the Stasi Prison Museum at Hohenschönhausen. Our regular guide Jeff Garner brought the history of the city to life and reminded us that perhaps more than any other European capital, Berlin is always changing.
