Developing Leaders - The Role of Sixth Form Student Counsellor

Posted on: 08/05/2026

For Year 13 students aiming to work in education or social jobs, or just diversify their CV or UCAS application, the role of Student Counsellor is one to consider. This experience has been incredibly rewarding and enjoyable; along with 15 other Year 13 students, we were available to Year 7 students as a source of support in Friday form through running Friday challenges. I also worked individually with Year 7s on Tuesdays, providing advice and answering any questions they had.

Peer role models are very important for younger years and many were relieved when they found not all Sixth form students are “scary”. Such an enthusiastic and excitable form has been a pleasure to work with.

The Student Counselling role shares crucial safeguarding information through training meetings, which can act as a basis for many future jobs. Even for those who do not want to work in related employment, this role helps develop communication and teamwork skills which are transferable across many jobs.

Other roles in school include the Literacy and Numeracy Ambassadors which share similar benefits in helping Year 7s and 8s. I was a Literacy Ambassador in Year 12, helping younger students develop their reading skills and this was an incredibly worthwhile experience.
